Reminder to EN-EL3 Users

(04-05-2006)

Notice to users of the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3 for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras

Thank you for choosing Nikon for your photography needs.

20th April 2006:
On December 6, 2005, we announced a voluntary recall and replacement program for certain EN-EL3 Rechargeable Li-ion batteries. However, it has come to our attention that there are still many users who have yet to replace their batteries.

In the interest of our customer’s safety, we have decided to extend a voluntary replacement program again. Please be reminded that this is not a new issue and replacement programs have been implemented in the past. We hope to be able to recall as many batteries back as possible.

It is advisable to replace your battery if you have already not done so, as the affected EN-EL3 batteries for Nikon Digital SLR cameras may on rare occasions overheat, causing the camera to be deformed or in worse cases, it may even cause a fire hazard.

The Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL3 is a lithium-ion battery for use with Nikon D100, D70, D70s and D50 digital-SLR cameras. Among these 4 models, it is supplied with purchase of the D100, D70 and D50, and is sold as a separate accessory for these camera models as well as for the D70s.

Please follow the steps below to identify if your battery is affected before requesting for a replacement battery.

Nikon sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

STEP 1: IDENTIFICATION OF AFFECTED EN-EL3 BATTERY

Affected batteries have a production lot number beginning with 44AX, 46AX, 47AX, 48AX, 49AX, 4AAX, 4BAX, 4CAX, 51AX, 53AX or 54AX (where 'X' refers to the last alphabet/numeric in the production lot number).

EN-EL3 production lot numbers can be found in the centre groove on the bottom (surface covered by the terminal cover) of the battery. Tilt the battery so that the light shines directly on the groove to see the lot number.

Please enter your 4 digit production lot number in the box and click SUBMIT to check whether your battery is affected.

Note: If the production lot number of your EN-EL3 does not begin with any of the first three digits shown or is not among those in the list of recalled lot numbers, or if your rechargeable battery is an EN-EL3a or EN-EL3e, your battery is not affected by this recall.

STEP 2: REQUESTING FOR REPLACEMENT EN-EL3 BATTERY

If you own one of the affected EN-EL3 batteries, you may wish to visit our Nikon Authorisied Service Facility for a one-to-one replacement. Do not attempt to return the affected lithium battery via airmail as it will not be compliant with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations.

Please call your region's Service Hotline at 8004745 to check the availability of the replacement battery before going down to the service centre.

Please not that only the original Nikon EN-EL3 within the affected production lot number will be entitled for the one exchange.
